Sandusky, Ohio. The Sandusky City Schools Board of Education voted unanimously to confirm that Chief Executive Officer and Superintendent, Dr. Eugene T. W. Sanders, would finish his career in Sandusky, by hiring him to a two-year contract that will continue his work for the 2020 academic year through 2022. The board took this action at the board meeting on Tuesday, February 18, 2020, following an executive session. The details of the contract are yet to be finalized. Board members felt the first priority for the Sandusky City School district was to assure solid and consistent leadership starting at the top of the organization.
“Dr. Sanders brings decades of expertise, leadership, and vision to the Sandusky City Schools”, Board President, Mrs. Brigitte Green-Churchwell stated. “The collaborative efforts among this board, Dr. Sanders’s leadership, and the dedication and commitment of our faculty, staff, and students have led to the successful transformation of our schools. While our work is continuing to move forward, we are excited about our organizational growth, and with the executive leadership of Dr. Sanders we will be positioned for continued success for decades to come.”
Dr. Sanders began his career as a Government and Economics teacher at Sandusky High School in 1980 and has held positions as high school administrator, Professor, Department Chair and Director of the Doctoral Program in Leadership Studies at Bowling Green State University, Executive Lecturer at The University of Hawaii at Maui College, and Chief Executive Officer and Superintendent for the Toledo Public Schools and Cleveland Metropolitan School District. Dr. Sanders returned to Sandusky City Schools in 2012, and has provided strategic vision and dynamic leadership to the Sandusky City Schools since then. Some of the most dynamic elements of his leadership have resulted in a 70 million dollar Building Better Dreams facilities initiative, along with significantly improved academic performance. His primary focus has been transformation, innovation, and cutting-edge technology.
“I am honored and humbled to be a part of the transformation of my hometown school district”, stated Dr. Sanders. “The credit for our success belongs to our teachers and administrators who are remarkably dedicated and focused on the success of our students and families. I am part of an amazing team and the best is yet to come. I am very excited about being able to complete my career where it started 40 years ago. I am blessed to live in a terrific community that values its schools and children.”
In May 2020, the district will unveil its 2030 Initiative, which will serve as the framework for the transformational efforts, which will occur over the next ten years. This August, the district will open two new elementary schools, the Sandusky Primary School, which will serve 1st and 2nd grade students, and the Sandusky Intermediate School, which will serve 3rd through 6th grade students. All current pre-school and kindergarteners will be temporarily housed at Mills Elementary and will move into their new facility (located at the current Hancock School site), which will be named the Sandusky Early Learning Center, in 2022.
Additional transitions will occur for the 2020-2021 school year, including the following:
  • Venice Heights Schools will be transitioned to the SCS Adult Career Center
  • Regional Center for Advanced Academic Studies will transition to the Adams Building
  • Sandusky Digital Academy will transition to a new space at the Jackson Building
